The church of St. Germain des Pres is the oldest in Paris.

These late Delacroix murals (oil on canvas) are in the church of Saint-Sulpice. Seurat and Signac spent a lot of time studying them.

In the Jardin du Luxembourg, there was some serious chess playing going on.

We also found a great playground where Nina and I hung out while Mary went to see a Vlaminck show in the Musée du Luxembourg.

There was a lot of contemporary sculpture on display in the Jardin du Luxembourg.

Petite Ligne Vert, 2007 by Christophe Dalecki made me think of Rachel Urkowitz's plastic flowers.

Nina and I went back to St. Sulpice since Mary was still in the Vlamick show.

One chapel held a video installation by Benjamin Bergery and Jim Campbell.

Then we went back to the Musée du Luxembourg to find Mary. She said the show was great, though photography was not permitted.

What a relief not to be going to another museum today!

Cathrine took us to visit her friends Martine and Phillipe at Martine's country house, just 30 minutes outside of Paris. The landscape changes very quickly.

Appoline joined us for the day and brought along a special card game for the train ride.

Driving into the village, we passed an old car.

Mary and Cathrine picked up some bread and a fruit tart.

Martine's house is just outside the village, within walking distance.

Martine showed Cathrine her garden while Nina and Appoline started a game of tag. In french it's something like "play the cat."

With limited ability to communicate, Nina and Appoline decided what to do next.

Some of those modernists were very post-modern.

At the end of the day, we met up with Kate and went out to dinner.

Back at the Parc du Bercy, the Cinemathèque Française—housed in a building designed by Frank Gehry as the American Center—was sponsoring an outdoor screening on an inflatable screen. The film—something by Max Ophuls—wasn't to start until 10:30, after it got dark. So, we headed home.

This was the first time that any of us had been out of the US on the fourth of July. It was relatively quiet.

Caravaggio's Death of the Virgin was so dark and dirty that we walked right passed it. This over-exposed photo reveals details not visible to the naked eye.

We exited via the pyramid…

In the early afternoon, we visited Galerie Lahumiere. Around the corner was the Swedish Cultural Center, which had an exhibit of paintings by Hilma af Klint.

There was an interesting hanging sculpture in the stairwell. I don't remember if it was labeled.

From there, we went to the Centre Pompidou. By chance, we noticed the reconstruction of Brancusi's studio, housed in its own building. Along with the Monet at the Musée de l'Orangerie, this was one of our trip's highlights.

Then we went up to the 6th floor to see a special exhibition, Traces du Sacré, which included everything from Kupka to Kenneth Anger.

On the 4th floor, we started to look at the part of the permanent collection that spans the mid-20th C. to the present. The place is so huge that we only got half way through the floor.

That evening, we had dinner at Cathrine's group exhibition in a friend's studio. The artists were serving dinner every night of the one-week show with different friends showing up each night.

Lots of good food, wine, cheese and conversation.

With the days being so long and Nina staying up so late, we rarely left the house before noon. On this day, we had lunch in the Parc de Bercy near Cathrine's. The landscape architect incorporated the old roads and rail beds of the area with new walkways crossing each other at different elevations.

Our main destination was the Musée d'Orsay. I've always wanted to see this building because it was used as a set for much of Orson Welles' version of The Trial.

As usual, we ended our day at the amusement park outside the Louvre.

While walking through the Tuileries, Nina noticed something that would become a major site of attraction.

Later that night, Appoline, the daughter of a neighbor, came by to play badminton on the sidewalk.

From the Eiffel Tower, we walked to the Musée de l'Orangerie to see the Monets. On the way, we passed by the Musée du quai Branly, an ethnographic museum designed by Jean Nouvel. The "living wall," seen here, was designed and planted by Gilles Clément and Patrick Blanc.

People like to have their picture taken in front of paintings.

Mary particularly liked the panel to her left.

The guards came out of the back room to say that it was time to leave.

In the morning, we got a closer look at the Eiffel Tower.

Once again, we saw lots of kids playing soccer in the adjoining park. We started to notice that girls in Paris do not play soccer.

Later that day, we went to the Rodin Museum. On the way home, we passed through the square in front of Saint Brigitte's where there was a large number of boys playing a very fast game of soccer.

It took us a while to get used to the time change.

Our first unguided excursion was to the West end the of the Jardin des Tuileries.

From there, we saw another impromptu concert taking place in the Place de la Concorde.

Richard Serra's Clara Clara is beautiful and works so well with its environment. The French have an appreciation for good art.

We got our first good view of the Eiffel Tower from the Pont de la Concorde.
